Dillon Bassett Ends UARA-STARS Win Streak with Newport Podium Finishby Caitlin Tinius October 15, 2013 0 comments
October 15, 2013 – 16 year old Dillon Bassett’s UARA-STARS win streak ended at three victories as he came up short at Newport Speedway (TN) during The Sunoco 150 Saturday evening. Despite ending his streak, Bassett finished third in his No. 44 Rex Younger Galleries / Pig Oil Ford, maintaining his point lead.
Dillon Bassett entered Newport with momentum on his side. Not only had he collected victories in his last three UARA-STARS events, Bassett turned in a remarkable performance at Martinsville Speedway during his first appearance in the Virginia is for Racing Lovers 300 by finishing second.
After qualifying 13th for The Sunoco 150, Dillon Bassett wasted no time getting to the front. On lap 18 he was inside the top ten, but by lap 40 the carbon monoxide was affecting him. Last weekend at Martinsville Bassett was treated for carbon monoxide poisoning following the race, making him more susceptible to fumes.
Despite feeling ill, Bassett continued to progress forward within the tight field. Five cautions fell during the first half, but the final 78 circuits went caution free and Bassett used the long run to his advantage, fighting to the third position. He attempted to pass Travis Swaim for second, but was unable to make it stick and came home third, his sixth podium finish of the season.
“We started the race pretty good,” Dillon Bassett commented. “Then I started to feel the effects from the carbon monoxide and it was a struggle behind the wheel. By the end of the race we were way too free, but we held on for a top three.”
Dillon Bassett’s performance awarded him Holley Performer of the Race for advancing the most positions and broke his run of bad luck at Newport Speedway. Since making his UARA-STARS debut in 2011 at Newport, Bassett has had tough luck on the 4/10 mile track. Despite Garrett Campbell winning The Sunoco 150, Bassett maintains his point lead by 37 points over Campbell heading into Tri County this weekend.
In three UARA-STARS races at Tri County Motor Speedway, Dillon Bassett has yet to finish outside the top five and scored his best finish of third earlier this season. The tour will make their second visit to the popular 4/10 mile track this Saturday October 19th. Follow @Dillon_Wayne44 and @BassettRacing1 on Twitter for updates.
