RB 4.8.13April 23, 2013 – UARA-STARS point leader, Ronnie Bassett Jr., prepares to battle NASCAR celebrities and the best of the late model stock car world this Thursday April 25th at Richmond International Raceway in the 6th Annual Denny Hamlin Short Track Showdown benefiting the Denny Hamlin Cystic Fibrosis Research Lab at the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU.

Thursday’s event marks the 3rd consecutive season the DH Short Track Showdown will be held on the 3/4 mile Richmond International Raceway. The prestigious 75 lap event, where drivers are selected by invite only, is scheduled to start at 8:30 PM following the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East Blue Ox 100.

Last season Ronnie Bassett Jr. got his first invite to the charity race but had mechanical failures plague his day. After encountering a broken wheel stud and broken hub in practice, Bassett qualified 14th in the 36 car field. During the 75 lap event the team had what they believed to be carburetor issues and officials authorized the Bassett Racing team to change the carburetor during the five minute break at lap 50. Following the restart Bassett realized the problem was in the engine itself, as the performance was unaffected by the change. Despite misfortune, Ronnie Bassett Jr. was able to maintain his on track position to finish 14th.

As 17 year old Ronnie Bassett Jr. heads into Richmond this season he feels much more confident and prepared. “Last season was my first time visiting Richmond and my team got the invite only two days before the test session. We scrambled and made it to the test, and had a decent race, but this year I think we are much more prepared,” Bassett commented.

The preparations by the No. 04 Bassett Racing team showed on Tuesday April 16th as approximately 30 late models took the track for practice. Although there were no official times, Ronnie Bassett Jr. was consistently fast and was clocked with some of the faster laps for the day, leaving Bassett confident in his No. 04 Ford.

Thursday’s event will mark the first NASCAR sanctioned late model event of the season for Bassett. With three UARA-STARS races under his belt in 2013, Ronnie Bassett Jr. has two wins at Southern National and Hickory, and a third place finish at Rockingham. He hopes to pair that momentum with his success in NASCAR Whelen All-American Series competition last season where he won five races in his seven starts.
