Dillon Bassett earned Rookie of the Race for the third consecutive event

The UARA-STARS have one race remaining on the schedule this season at Rockingham on November 3rd, however 15 year old Dillon Bassett has already clinched 2012 Rookie of the Year honors following his top five finish at Tri-County in the Alpha Energy Solutions 150.

Dillon Bassett raced his way to his fifth consecutive top five this past Saturday, a streak he started at Tri-County in August. In addition to his fifth place finish, Bassett earned the Circle Wheels / Extreme Trophies & More Rookie of the Race and Holley Performer of the Race for the third consecutive event.

While Bassett walked away accomplished from the weekend’s events at Tri-County, the #44 Bassett Racing team had their share of struggles. After having a strong car in race trim and ending final practice with the third fastest lap, Dillon Bassett qualified a dismal 22nd in the 25 car field.

Unfortunately his starting position got the best of him when Bassett got caught in an early race incident on lap ten as Scott Turlington and Chandler LeVan got together in front of him. Bassett suffered only cosmetic damage which his team repaired when he made his way to pit road twice under the caution, while remaining on the lead lap.

The field went back green on lap 16. Bassett’s car was still strong and his handling was unaffected by the incident. He remained patient, working himself into the top ten with 15 to go. The final caution waived on lap 134 and when the field restarted Bassett was able to work his way into the top five. Coming to the checkered flag he battled Grant Wimbish for the fourth position, but came up a few feet shy.

They fought their way home to a top five finish, but the team was disappointed with the outcome and had few words as they felt they had a car to contend for the win. Unfortunately starting deep in the field, there are only so many spots to be gained in the 150 lap event and only so much time before tire wear factors in.

Dillon Bassett’s run of solid performances have kept him second in UARA point standings going into the final event of the season at Rockingham. He is 71 points back from Travis Swaim, who all but clinched his championship at Tri-County by winning the race.

While mathematically possible, it is highly unlikely for Dillon Bassett to take over the point lead at Rockingham given Swaim’s performance this season. The #44 Roof Shampoo team is focused on having their best possible performance at Rockingham. They have nothing to gain and nothing to lose at the final event, as they are solidly locked into the second place points position.

The UARA-STARS will take the track at Rockingham on November 3rd for “The Championship 3” weekend presented by theRichardChildressRacingMuseum. They will be joined by the NASCAR K&N East series in addition to the Frank Kimmel Street Stock Nationals for the weekend’s events.
